Elizabeth Laird was born in 1874 in Owen Sound, Ontario. She earned her doctorate in Science from the University of Toronto in 1927, after studying at such prestigious schools as the University of Berlin and Cambridge. For 36 years, Dr. Laird served as the head of the physics department at Mount Holyoke University. During this time she studied the properties of "soft" X-rays which occur in the area between known x-rays and the extreme ultraviolet rays.
